Towing for the Fourth: Transmission Warning Signs Before You Hit the Road

The Fourth of July is one of the biggest towing weekends of the summer. Boats headed to Keyhole, campers loaded up for a long weekend in the Bighorns, side-by-sides bound for the trails, trailers full of gear for a family gathering: if you drive a diesel truck in Wyoming, chances are you're hauling something this weekend.

Towing is exactly when a transmission that's already starting to struggle will let you know it. Heavier loads, higher engine loads, and longer drives all put more stress on the transmission than everyday driving does. Before you hitch up and head out, it's worth taking a few minutes to check for the signs below.

Signs Your Transmission May Not Be Ready to Tow

Slipping or flaring under load. If the engine revs up but the truck doesn't accelerate the way it should, especially going up a grade, that's the transmission slipping. Towing will make this worse, not better.

Delayed or hard engagement. A pause before the truck moves after shifting into drive, or a hard clunk into gear, often points to fluid or valve body issues that towing load will aggravate.

Shudder at steady speeds. A vibration or shudder while cruising, particularly noticeable while towing at highway speed, is a common early sign of torque converter wear.

Overheating on grades. If the truck has struggled with heat while towing in the past, or doesn't have an auxiliary transmission cooler, holiday traffic and summer temperatures are a rough combination for a transmission that's already working hard.

Fluid that looks or smells off. Dark, burnt-smelling fluid, or fluid with visible metal particles, means internal wear has already started. This is a quick check that takes a couple of minutes and can save a weekend.

A Few Towing Reminders for the Long Weekend

  • Check transmission fluid level and condition before you leave, not after you notice a problem

  • Know your trailer's loaded weight and make sure it's within your truck's towing capacity

  • Give the transmission time to cool during long grades or stop-and-go holiday traffic

  • If you've already noticed any of the signs above, get it looked at before you load up, not after you're already on the highway
