The 68RFE automatic transmission, found in Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel trucks, is capable but has a handful of well-documented weak points that owners should understand, especially if the truck is used for towing or has aftermarket tuning. Running into 68RFE problems is never fun for Ram Owners

Build 68RFE Transmission

The Most Common 68RFE Failure Points

Overdrive clutch pack wear. This is one of the most frequently reported issues, particularly under heavy load or with increased power. Symptoms often include flaring or a delayed shift into overdrive.

Sun shell failure. The factory sun shell is a known weak point on higher-power or heavily towed trucks. When it fails, it typically causes a sudden and complete loss of power to the rear wheels.

Torque converter shudder. A shudder felt during light acceleration or at cruising speed is a common early symptom, often tied to converter clutch material wear or fluid condition.

Valve body and solenoid issues. Erratic shifting, harsh engagement, or delayed shifts can often be traced back to valve body wear or failing solenoids rather than the transmission's internal clutches.

68RFE Problems & Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Flaring or slipping when shifting into overdrive

  • A shudder or vibration during light throttle, steady-speed driving

  • Delayed or harsh engagement when shifting from park into drive

  • Sudden loss of power under load, which can indicate sun shell failure

Protecting Your 68RFE

For trucks used for towing or running above stock power, a few things make a real difference in longevity:

  • Regular fluid and filter service on a shorter interval than the factory recommends

  • Auxiliary transmission coolers for trucks that tow often

  • Upgraded internals (clutch packs, sun shell, valve body) for trucks running increased power

your 68RFE is already showing symptoms, catching it early is almost always less expensive than waiting for a full failure, which can also damage other drivetrain components.
